The BBC chief executive has embraced the idea of requiring broadcasters to produce ‘distinctly British’ content, after losing UK talent to rich streaming services.

The likes of Netflix have invested huge sums of money in producing UK-based programs and hiring UK creators, but their shows generally have to appeal to an international audience. This can often result in dramas such as Sex Education which are filmed in the UK with UK actors but have American characteristics and your.

Last week the government announced it would introduce legislation requiring UK public service broadcasters to broadcast ‘distinctly British’ programming. They said otherwise the programs could become “indistinguishable from those produced elsewhere and less relevant to the British public”.

Former Culture Minister John Whittingdale presented Only Fools and Horses, The Great British Bake Off and Coronation Street as shows reflecting Britain.

Tim Davie told the Culture Select Committee that he was not sure whether such a rule was written into law, but broadly welcomed the approach: “Overall, the protection of British dramas and locally produced dramas with locally produced stories is vital. I also think this is where we are most powerful as the BBC.

Davie said the government’s promotion of Britishness could be a counterbalance to the “fully globalized algorithmic†ordering of TV shows by the streaming companies: “I in no way associate this with a flag or a flag. editorial control â€.

He suggested that shows such as Call the Midwife, Small Ax and Michaela Coel’s Emmy-winning series I May Destroy You – which she wrote for the BBC after turning down Netflix – were examples of BBC programming. typically British: preventing you from being a worldwide success. Normal People is stronger because of its location.

The cost of producing high-end dramas has skyrocketed in recent years, driven by insatiable demand from streaming companies trying to capture market share. As a result, the BBC and other UK broadcasters will increasingly team up with a global streaming company to share the ever increasing costs of creating programs.

Yet this inevitably involves the relinquishment of some editorial control and risks losing talent. The BBC encouraged Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge to huge success, only for her to sign a huge deal with Amazon. Davie said it was a growing challenge: “If you are a successful writer, actor or director the demands on you have never been greater and there are opportunities for transformational wealth. The BBC must do things differently from other players.

Davie also said the BBC is increasingly choosing to retain UK streaming rights to its popular shows for the iPlayer service, meaning BBC shows are less likely to appear on Netflix. .

As the government prepares to announce how much the BBC can charge for licensing fees over the next five years, Davie has said the company urgently needs at least a small increase from the current £ 159 per year to stay competitive: “We have grown 1% this year and are down 30% in real terms since 2010. We need to make sure we don’t take this service out because then we’ll go into a spiral if you don’t. don’t have the investment.

Davie was seated next to BBC Chairman Richard Sharp, who said he was baffled that so much about the broadcaster’s inner workings had been leaked to politicians and the media: “There seems to be a culture, which I was certainly not used to. in the private sector, free communication on confidential matters.

Rupert Murdoch may have turned 90 this year, but his media empire continues to grow. A week after the announcement of a new UK television channel, TalkTV, and a Sky News program featuring Piers Morgan, his Australian Empire will unveil a dedicated news streaming service called Flash next month.

Flash – which went by the working name of NewsFlash – will be offered alongside Binge and Kayo as a one-stop-shop for news junkies looking to access 20 news channels for an expected price of $ 10 or less.

With its Foxtel linear service already holding the rights to global and local news channels CNN, Sky News, Fox News, BBC World News, CNBC and Bloomberg, Flash has a number of brands on board but needs to sign up for more. of information services to be an attractive offer. The ABC has yet to be convinced it’s worth it.

It remains to be seen whether there is a local market for a paid news service when the ABC news channel already offers a free one and catch-up information is available 24/7 on the Nine channels, Seven and 10. Some industry watchers strongly doubt that this will fly the same way as entertainment and sports services.

Sources claim that viewers will be able to choose between watching a live broadcast or a set of highlights, and like other streaming services, an algorithm will learn your news preferences.

Foxtel boss Patrick Delany said Flash will offer “a new way to stay informed on local and international politics, business and events.”

The streaming business is certainly booming, but is there room for a third product? While Foxtel struggled to stay profitable with its high-cost cable service, Binge and Kayo drove subscriber growth and paid streaming subscribers grew 155% to over 2 million. last year.

Never hurts for long

Meanwhile, the West Australian got an international scoop on Murdoch this week when he posted a juicy headline: “Morrison Meets Rupert Murdoch in New York”.

The title of West’s article read: “Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison meets with media mogul Rupert Murdoch at private dinner in New York.”

The internet never forgets: The West Australian reported a meeting between Scott Morrison and Rupert Murdoch that did not take place. Photograph: The West Australian

The only problem was that it wasn’t true. Morrison met with News Corp chief executive Robert Thomson because Murdoch was not available.

The story was quickly corrected, but the title stuck on social media posts and cached on Google.

Readers who clicked to read the whole story from social media posts it was said that it was Thomson who hosted Morrison, but those who only saw the title on social media got a completely different impression.

cold shoulder Facebook

Facebook confirmed that it would not enter into a business deal with SBS or The Conversation under the news media trading code, months after News Corp, Nine Entertainment, Seven West Media, along with smaller publishers , including Guardian Australia and Australian Community Media, have signed agreements. .

While they don’t say so, the social media platform says neither of the two outlets has the right kind of content, reach or engagement to make it viable.

Three lifestyle-focused websites – Broadsheet Media, the Urban List and Concrete Playground – have already been denied a deal on the grounds that they don’t have enough media coverage.

Facebook’s head of news partnerships for Australia and New Zealand, Andrew Hunter, said there are types of news content that can best deliver value to publishers and Facebook.

“Our trade agreements are based on a series of factors, including the type of content developed, reach and engagement,†said Hunter. “We continue to engage with publishers to help them take advantage of free referral traffic, monetization products, and other initiatives and investments. “

Peter Lewis, director of the Center for Responsible Technology, called on the government to intervene on behalf of small publishers.

“Facebook’s move goes against the basic proposition of the News Media Trading Code, that Facebook was an advertising monopoly that should be required to compensate public interest journalism for content,” he said. Lewis said.

“The refusal to recognize the value of academic journalism and multicultural broadcasting speaks volumes about Facebook’s commitment to evidence-based public service journalism. “

Labor spokesperson Michelle Rowland also questioned why Facebook will not strike a deal with “one of Australia’s most trusted news platforms, especially for ethnically diverse communities.”

Alcohol flash

We can all agree that a high court ruling, a leadership spill or an earthquake is real breaking news and as such probably deserves a last minute alert from here on out. news app on your mobile phone.

Nothing like an alert to get attention.

But the Australian recently gave the alert a business overhaul and Oz readers have drawn attention to be informed of the Australian’s Wine Club’s latest deal.

The Australian told his readers in a recent news alert that they were “blessed to be able to offer a divine offer on divine wines from Clare Valley”.

It is no coincidence that a former editor-in-chief of the Australian John Lehmann is today business director and editor-in-chief of the newspaper, as well as a wine columnist. Lehmann left journalism a few years ago to become a winemaker before returning to Holt Street as a reporter, but he has retained his passion for wine.

Behind the Wine Club push is, of course, the drop in revenue for News Corp’s news media division, which includes Australian newspapers, in last month’s global financial results for the year to the end of June.

Last month, revenues fell 21%, from about $ 2.8 billion to about $ 2.2 billion, according to figures released by Thomson.

Australian newspapers’ advertising revenues fell by $ 90 million because News shut down a series of regional and suburban newspapers, and because of “the continued weakness in the print advertising market, exacerbated by Covid-19,” said the society.

Force error

Strewth Australian editor-in-chief Alice Workman has apologized for a story in Wednesday’s newspaper about Kristina Keneally’s plans to move to a new home in Fowler’s safe headquarters in southwest Sydney.

“Keneally and her husband Ben are considering their migration options, now that the couple’s three children have left their northern beach home,†Workman wrote.

But Kristina and Ben Keneally’s second child, Caroline, was stillborn in 1999, and the Deputy Leader of the Labor Party in the Senate has spoken publicly about her personal loss and the stillbirth issue in general.

She even created a Special Senate Committee on Stillbirth Research and Education, and wrote about her loss as recently last November.

Under Correction Corner, Workman wrote: “In an article about Kristina Keneally’s move to southwest Sydney on Wednesday, Strewth incorrectly said three of the Labor senator’s children had left home. While this is the case for her two sons, her daughter Caroline is stillborn. We sincerely apologize for any harm this may have caused. “

But the article contained more than the hurtful reference to the Keneally children. It contained information about the location of his home which the senator asked the Australian to remove as it could pose a threat to his safety. Asio chief executive Mike Burgess has said publicly in hearings that Keneally is a target for some far-right groups. The entire room has now been removed.

SMH apologies

The Sydney Morning Herald on Friday apologized to Professor Raina MacIntyre, head of the biosafety program at the Kirby Institute at the University of NSW, for an article published on July 24.

We won’t go into the details of his complaint, but suffice it to say that the Herald has said it sincerely regrets any suggestion that MacIntyre had “acted dishonestly in voicing his comment on the AstraZeneca vaccine.” “He apologizes for any prejudice and damage to his esteemed academic and professional reputation this has caused,†the apology said.

Same old tune

Just weeks after News Corp Australia’s end news was announced “Its long-standing editorial hostility towards policies to reduce carbon emissions, “the Australian accepted a half-page paid advertisement from climate deniers entitled” The Great Climate Furphy “.

On page 9, the Climate Study Group, a group of seven Australian conservative men which was formed in 2009, called on the government to stop subsidizing renewables and not hamper new efficient coal-fired power plants.

In addition to placing ads in Oz, the group has published reports and submissions to the Australian government rejecting the science of man-made climate change.

  • NHL triggers clause to sell remaining stake
  • MLB retains 15% stake in Disney Streaming Services

The Walt Disney Company acquired the National Hockey League (NHL) 10% stake in Disney Streaming Services for US $ 350 million.

The NHL has exercised a contract option to trigger the US $ 350 million deal and the deal is expected to close before Disney’s fiscal 2021 end. If Disney had used its own option to buy the NHL shares, it would have cost the media giant $ 500 million.

Disney first invested in the tech company, previously named BAMTech, in 2016, when it acquired a 33% stake. In 2017, Disney paid an additional $ 1.58 billion to take over as majority shareholder, securing an additional 42% of BAMTech’s shares.

After renaming the Disney Streaming Services division as a result of this investment in 2017, Disney now owns 85% of the company, with the remaining 15% owned by Major League Baseball (MLB).

MLB created the digital streaming entity in 2015 as a spin-off of MLB Advanced Media, with its technology now used as the backbone for the Disney + and ESPN + platforms.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Disney could purchase MLB’s remaining stake, valued at over $ 752 million, starting in 2022.

For the NHL, the deal includes an injection of funds and comes after entering into a seven-year nationwide broadcast partnership with Disney-owned ESPN in March. This deal includes a package of 75 annual regular season games on Disney’s ESPN + and Hulu streaming services.

It’s almost exactly as you remember it.

AT the underground video in Jamaica Plain, there are shelves of DVDs ready to rent: new releases, old ones, animated films. There are the Raisinets and Whoppers individual candy boxes, and the popcorn machine behind the counter. And, of course, there are the movie-loving employees, ready to offer you a movie recommendation – no algorithm necessary. On a recent Wednesday afternoon, the 1978 horror film “The Swarm” played on an overhead monitor. Movie posters of “2001: A Space Odyssey” and “Clueless” adorn the walls.

But in this video rental shop in Egleston Square – a remnant of what was once a thriving industry – some things are different. There’s a cafe offering items like pancakes, smoothies, flatbread pizzas, and home-roasted coffee. There is an adjacent 15-seat theater-style screening room, available by reservation for private events. And the more than 16,000 films, which customers once rented by the day, can now only be viewed by those with an annual or monthly subscription. media subscription. Monthly, flat-rate, and unlimited rental subscriptions range from $20 to $60, a sliding scale that reflects how many DVDs customers can view at a time.

“Nostalgia will absolutely bring someone in,” Video Underground owner Kevin Koppes said, but he knew the store needed more to keep people coming back.

Video Underground, which now bills itself as a “movie cafe”, opened in 2002 on Center Street in Jamaica Plain. Koppes took it over in 2013 when he discovered it was in danger of closing and moved it to its current location on Washington Street in 2014. He opened the cafe soon after and took over the nearby space for add a screening room in 2019. The store hosted weekly public movie nights in the screening room before the pandemic. Now it is reliably rented a few days a week for private openings. (For non-members, rentals start at $25 with an hourly rate.) “We do a lot with a pretty crummy space,” Koppes said.

Koppes doesn’t feel like it’s competing with services like Netflix or Hulu or HBO Max — because hardly anyone is Video Underground “their main way to see movies,” he said. Instead, the store fills in the gaps left by the streaming giants. While some films may be removed from streaming catalogs after a while, “our collection is only growing,” Koppes said, adding that they invest in the catalog every week. Some customers are looking for a DVD’s special features, like a commentary track or deleted scenes, or are looking for titles that never made it to streamers.

“Even though I run a catalog of thousands of DVDs, I don’t think streaming is inherently bad,” he said. “But I still strongly believe that there is a place for physical media.”

Other customers, like Dan Thomas, 69, appreciate the human interaction at the rental store. Thomas does not have streaming services. “Sometimes I have to wait for things, but there’s always more to see,” said Thomas, who picked up “Solaris” and “The Eight Hundred” on a recent Wednesday.

Despite Koppes’ dedication to physical forms of media, the move to the subscription-level model for movie rentals was partly intended to emulate streaming services, he said. This means that in order for the current 700-plus subscribers to get the most bang for their buck, they need to come in often to redeem their DVDs — which Koppes hopes will entice them to try a coffee or a pastry. Or vice versa: a regular coffee shop customer might see a DVD title that catches their eye and decide to try a subscription.

“The longer the little bell rings at our door, the better off we are in general, and the more likely someone is to try something,” he said.

For locals like Thomas, the Video Underground is pretty much the only place (besides libraries) to get their DVD rental fix. Most surviving video rental stores – MovieWorks in Brookline, hollywood express in Cambridge, and Chet’s Video & Candy Shoppe in Marblehead – have all closed in the past decade. Massachusetts’ Last Blockbuster Video Store closed in 2014. Overall, DVD sales have fallen in recent years, from 6.1 billion physical video transactions in 2011 to 1.2 billion in 2021, according to market research published in a wired item.

The stores eclectic catalog has titles ranging from French New Wave films to art house films to current Oscar nominees. The floor only displays a fraction of the selection, organized into staggered categories like “Best of the Worst” and “Experiments in Gnarly”. The store has more than four times the number of movie titles on Netflix reported by the streaming service aggregator just look.

Carlos Troncoso, who came on a Wednesday with his two young sons, played the store’s “dice game,” where $1 buys a mystery DVD based on the outcome of a roll of six dice. They ended up with a DVD of eight feature films by Charlie Chaplin, “Foul Play” and “Spectre”.

“A place like this you need for every generation to learn to appreciate movies and movies,” said Troncoso, who in addition to his VU membership has a number of service subscriptions. streaming. “It’s about being able to expose them to things they won’t click on.”

And yet, there will always be a way Koppes can’t improve streaming services: “No physical item can match the convenience of sitting there in your SpongeBob pajamas, pressing the button over and over again,” he said.

But the dedicated clientele don’t care. Sarah Tuttle, who came with her boyfriend, Will Tao, watched “Super Mario Bros” and “Zardoz” on a Wednesday afternoon. “I just think it’s cool that this type of place can still exist,” said Tuttle, who lives in Jamaica Plain. “It’s more of an experience than a convenience.”

Somewhere along the line, the store has become something of a community center. The cafe has its regulars, whose employees know their usual order. There are dozens of DVD swaps every week, and renters often ask Koppes for his two cents on a title before committing to it. Right now, the long-running Oscars contest is in full swing: People fill out a sheet to guess which movies will win, and the person with the most correct predictions receives a $25 gift card. The person with the least gets a five-minute sermon from Koppes.

“The way I think mom-and-pop video libraries were intertwined with people’s lives, I think we’re still kind of intertwined with people’s lives,” he said, “at a different time, for different reasons.”

The French government has decreed that and other streaming services will have to devote up to a quarter of their French revenues to creating local content. Eighty percent of the respective investment of each platform will be devoted to the production of French programs, TV films and documentaries (more Emilie in Paris and Lupine, nobody?). The remaining fifth – four or five percent of their total French income – will be used to make theatrical films.

The country is the first member of the European Union to apply new streaming rules under the European Commission. The framework is designed to create greater parity between streaming platforms and other broadcasters and entertainment services across the EU.

Until now, streaming platforms were prohibited from adding a theatrically released film to their French libraries for up to three years after the film was released in cinemas nationwide. If the services spend a quarter of their French revenues on local content, they will have access to the films within 12 months of their release date. If they opt for the minimum investment of 20%, they will have to wait at least a year before adding theatrical releases.

Thus, the platforms are encouraged to invest the entire 25% of income. Disney +, for example, might be tempted to go this route in order to be able to release films like Marvel, Star Wars and Pixar much earlier in France.

Netflix plans to reinvest 20% of its French revenues in local content, according to Variety. He hopes to lock in a 12-month window for theatrical movies. The company at the Cannes Film Festival for years, in part because of the.

The EU has been working for years to ensure that streaming platforms have it in their libraries. Other jurisdictions have tried to get streaming services to invest in local productions as well.

The Canadian government, for example, is seeking to contribute hundreds of millions of dollars to the creation of local content. In 2017, Netflix committed to Canadian productions over five years.

The cinematic era of classic westerns probably began with John Wayne’s starring role in “Stagecoach” (1939). Wayne did this with director John Ford, who would team up with Wayne for several other films. Ford ultimately won four Academy Awards for Best Director. Wayne has become the greatest Western star of all time.

The classic Western era probably ended with “Unforgiven” (1992). The film was directed by Clint Eastwood. He also played the lead role of William Munny. The film won the Oscars for Best Director and Best Picture. Interestingly, if Wayne has a challenger for Western’s greatest actor, it’s Eastwood.

Streaming has changed the way movies are viewed. It only emerged as a medium about 15 years ago, when Amazon and Netflix each launched a service. Together, they have more than 300 million paying subscribers worldwide. Streaming has severely damaged the medium where classic westerns were first viewed – American cinema.

Sometimes we like to watch lower quality movies because they feature some of our favorite artists – for example, John Wayne, Burt Lancaster, Marlon Brando, or Jack Nicholson. Or they could be the interesting, flawed work of notable directors like John Ford or John Huston.

Another possible reason to watch them is that they might have taken risks and covered controversial topics, even if they didn’t do it very well. And older examples can function as time capsules from earlier eras, giving us insight into norms and attitudes of the past.

To determine the worst classic western available to stream at home, 24/7 Tempo developed an index using the average ratings on IMDb, an Amazon-owned online movie database, and a combination of Audience Scores and Tomatometer Scores on Rotten tomatoes, an aggregator of online movie and TV reviews, in November 2021. All ratings have been weighted equally. Only 20th century films classified by genre “Western†on IMDb and at least 2,500 audience votes on IMDb or Rotten Tomatoes were taken into account.

We only included movies available on paid streaming services HBO Max, Netflix, Disney +, Amazon Prime, Philo, Paramount +, Hulu Plus, Apple TV, Criterion Channel and Fubo TV, or free streaming services Tubi, Pluto TV, Peacock, Plex, Crackle, IMDbTV and Vudu Free. Data on streaming availability by website is taken from the streaming data site Reelgood, and updated in November 2021.

The worst classic western to air right now is Return of the Seven (1966). Here are the details:

> Available on: Tubi, Pluto TV
> IMDb rating: 5.5 / 10 (4,122 reviews)
> Rotten Tomatoes audience score: 34% (4,238 votes)
> Rotten Tomatoes tomato score: 13% (8 reviews)
> Director: Burt Kennedy

“The Magnificent Seven” is considered a Western classic and has been selected for the United States National Film Registry from the Library of Congress. With this sequel, which premiered six years after the first film with most of its original cast, the apple has fallen far from the tree. In it, Chico, one of the original seven, is captured in the desert by a large group of gunmen. His wife asks his former compatriots for help, leading them to reunite in their quest to save their former partner. One reviewer called it “another worthless and unnecessary sequel”.
